6 Things I Learned at IMATS that ANYONE Can Benefit From

For those of you who don’t know what IMATS is, it is the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show. There are lots of new products to look at and try, panels to learn from, and demos to watch. This was my first time visiting IMATS and it was such an amazing experience. For those who have been before, it was a lot smaller this year due to COVID, but it was still an incredible experience and I can’t wait to see what happens next year.

I had so much fun shopping around and checking out all the products and tools, but my favorite part of IMATS were the panels I went to. I saw Dune’s Donald Mowat and Love Larson, the team from The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Göran Lundström who did Jared Leto’s prosthetics in House of Gucci, and Mimi Choi, the incredible instagram illusion make-up artist. From those panels, I learned so much about prosthetics, the business of artistry, and how the make-up department works together to create a cohesive look for the film. It was so educational and inspiring, and I was able to take away even more than just knowledge of makeup and the beauty industry. It was so eye opening and I feel called to share it. This is knowledge that I feel ANYONE looking to grow as a person or in their career/specialty can benefit from. So I hope that in sharing what was so special and inspiring for me to hear will also help you. If you went to IMATS or have other pockets of wisdom in line with the ones I’ve shared, please share them in the comments below!

Love Always,

Nat

The 6 Things I Learned….

Mimi Choi

1. Don’t Strive for Perfection

Instead, strive to be better than you were yesterday. Learn and improve a little more every day, and imagine how far you will be in a month or even a year from now!

2. A good leader treats EVERYONE with the same amount of respect.

No matter where each person is in the hierarchy of things.

3.When you are well liked and a pleasure to work with, you will go far.

4. Collaboration and Connection is crucial.

5. You must have passion for what you do.

Donald Mowat

When you have passion for something growth and success will inevitably come because you will want to evolve. improve, and learn.

6. Challenge yourself.

And when a situation challenges you or you feel limited, do your best to get it done with the tools you have. These challenges will force us to learn, think outside of the box and become even better at what we are doing. Perhaps, some of us might even be innovative!
